The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
