British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
